Repairing the World

Tikkun Olam (Repair the World) creates opportunities to repair our world by acting on social justice and environmental issues, such as packing food at the Maryland Food Bank for Maryland’s citizens who are hungry and sponsoring food drives.

We are open to exploring opportunities to have an impact on justice issues through advocacy, education and partnering with activist organizations in our community.

Green Initiatives:

Beit Tikvah participates in the Synagogue Social Action Task Force and has attained our Green Synagogue status from the Baltimore Jewish Environmental Network's Green Synagogue Covenant of Commitment program.

Beit Tikvah sponsored the creation of the Baltimore Green and Just Celebrations Guide, a project of THE ASSOCIATED's Sustainability Initiative. One of our members played a substantial role in developing the guide. The Green and Just Celebrations Guide was originated by the Washington, DC-based organization “Jews United for Justice” (JUFJ). The Guide is described on the JUFJ website as:
…a little booklet with a big mission: to work for the day when every one of the $30 million dollars that Jewish families in our area spend on weddings and bar and bat mitzvah celebrations every year will be spent in a way that reflects Jewish values.

Each section of the booklet offers specific suggestions for how families can make purchasing choices for their special day in ways that are mindful of workers’ rights and environmental impact.

The book is illustrated throughout with Jewish teachings, and with the real-life stories of more than forty DC-area families who made creative green and just choices for their own celebrations.

Bringing this project to Baltimore will make greener and more just choices available to the tens of thousands of Jewish families in our area. The project builds on the exciting work of the Baltimore Jewish Environmental Network, which has already engaged so many congregations in environmental stewardship and which is an active participant in this project.
